Description

Gilbert Strang’s textbooks have revolutionized the way linear algebra is taught, making a significant shift from abstract vector spaces to a focus on specific examples of the four fundamental subspaces: the column space and the nullspace of A, as well as A’.

**Strang’s latest work, Introduction to Linear Algebra, 5th Edition (PDF),** transcends traditional textbooks intended solely for introductory linear algebra courses. While it remains the primary resource for foundational concepts, this updated edition has evolved into a vital textbook for advanced studies, especially with the addition of chapters exploring real-world applications of Singular Value Decomposition (SVD), probability, statistics, and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) in fields such as finance and genetics. In an increasingly data-driven world, linear algebra has emerged as a cornerstone of modern applied mathematics, and this ebook enhances the comprehension and appreciation of its significance.

**This comprehensive resource not only features challenge problems intended to augment, but also builds upon the well-received review problems from previous editions.** Following the introductory course, the ebook delves into eight crucial applications, including topics like graphs and networks, engineering differential equations, Fourier methods and Fast Fourier Transforms (FFT), statistics, computer graphics, linear programming, cryptography, and singular values.

**Target Audience:** Thousands of educators across universities, colleges, and even high schools have embraced this ebook, as it effectively elucidates this vital subject. It serves as an indispensable tool for students everywhere, supported by comprehensive websites and engaging video lectures, ensuring an effective learning experience. Each chapter begins with a summary to facilitate quick and efficient review, making it an optimal study aid.

**Table of Contents:** This edition encompasses the following chapters— Chap. 1: Introduction to Vectors; Chap. 2: Solving Linear Equations; Chap. 3: Vector Spaces and Subspaces; Chap. 4: Orthogonality; Chap. 5: Determinants; Chap. 6: Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors; Chap. 7: Singular Value Decomposition; Chap. 8: Linear Transformations; Chap. 9: Complex Vectors and Matrices; Chap. 10: Applications; Chap. 11: Numerical Linear Algebra; Chap. 12: Linear Algebra in Probability and Statistics; Matrix Factorizations; Index; Six Great Theorems.

Review Highlights

Starting with the ebook itself, Strang’s 5th Edition of Introduction to Linear Algebra maintains a delicate balance between theory and real-world applications, with the mission to “open linear algebra to the world” (Preface, page x). Specifically designed for serious undergraduate students—not exclusively those populating the lecture halls of MIT, where Strang teaches—the writing style is both personal and captivating. The content is presented in an exceptionally clear and informative manner, offering seasoned instructors fresh insights. The initial six chapters lay down a solid foundation, covering systems of linear equations, vector algebra and geometry, vector spaces, determinants, orthogonality, and eigenvalues with eigenvectors. The subsequent three chapters concentrate on singular value decomposition, linear transformations, and complex numbers and matrices, ultimately leading into discussions of a broad array of contemporary applications and computational topics. The ebook wraps up with a concise yet insightful overview of linear statistical analysis.

**Important Note:** This sale exclusively includes the PDF version of Introduction to Linear Algebra, 5th Edition. Please be aware that no online access codes are included with this purchase.**

By leveraging this thorough and well-structured resource, both students and educators can navigate the complexities of linear algebra with confidence, enhancing their mathematical expertise and practical application skills.

It’s just slightly blurry photos of every page of the book, taken in poor lighting. Not what I expected. Not even properly scanned. Not searchable. Pretty disappointed. On the upside, It IS technically a copy of the book that I can use for homework.
